DOS 6.0 for Windows XP

Comment:
I am installing a certain program that is looking for DOS 6.0, while it reports that my new Dell computer only has DOS 5.0. I have Windows XP on the computer. Is it possible to upgrade to DOS 6.0 and would there be any problems running all my other programs if I did?

windows xp doesnt have ms-dos. the program tells you that because it cannot reconize ms-dos. windows xp dos is emulated. download an ms-dos 6.22 bootdisk. if your game runs from acd-rom then look in the win3.1 or dos forum for "cd-rom in dos".

Windows XP in fact emulates MS-DOS 8.0
But it does have some difficulties with programs that seek a particular DOS version.
Unless you know what you are doing DO NOT install any version of DOS untill you install some sort of Boot or Partition Manager.

Windows XP reports version DOS 5.00 to DOS programs that ask what version of DOS they are running under. (XP had to support less function this way.)
There should be a SETVER (set version) function under the XP CMD window that corresponds to the SETVER of DOS that allows you to enter the programs name and the version it needs reported to it.

Another caveat:
Don't install DOS6.0 on anything. 5.0 or 6.20 and 6.22 are fine. 6.0 has serious problems.
