Specs: Windows ME, Pentium II

How can I disable the automatically loaded HIMEM.SYS under MSDOS 8.0 (Windows ME)?

As far I know it is automatically loaded by IO.SYS, but maybe there is an easy trick/patch or setting under MSDOS.SYS to disable it.

I need to unload it, because I need QEMM in order to run DesqView!

Thank you

Look for and run msconfig.exe
Should be in your system folder.
I'm running Win98se so I'm not sure if win me still has it.

The problem is that msconfig is *ONLY* a visual front-end for editing the system initialization files (config.sys, autoexec.bat, registry, win.ini, ...), so it does not work.

There is not option to disable the HIMEM.SYS load under msconfig.

Thank you anyway for your fast response Doc.

Change the name of himem.sys, then create a null file called himem.sys

foa a null file
copy con=himem.sys (hit space once) then ctrl-z to save.

Please email a copy of WinME himem.sys and smartdrv.exe. They are the fastest MSFT has.

Check UMBPCI.sys at

Hi Jim,

This does not work, since seems the support for XMS is built in IO.SYS, and does not uses HIMEM.SYS.

You are right the included HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.EXE and SMARTDRV.EXE versions are the best, and work fine under MS-DOS 7.10 ;-
