When using my sound card for games in real DOS with the real-mode driver that came with the sound card, I experience a high pitched screeching noise whenever a sound effect is played. This is especially annoying (and somewhat funny) when in WC Privateer the characters speak.

I'm guessing it's driver settings.
Check that the BLASTER environment variable is set (type in SET) properly. If one of the settings is wrong, you'll either get no audio, messed up audio, or audio that cuts out after a few seconds.
The driver should have some text with it to help you with finding the right settings. I've also had problems with having a driver but no BLASTER variable loaded - sound would only work with some programs.

All of my configuration settings are correct, it is just the game I'm trying to play. For anyone out there who cannot get Wing Commander Privateer to run properly: you probably never will. I can get it to run in dos mode, but not in windows. In addition to that I am only able to listen to the game's music.. oh well.
