Is there enough or any significant difference between msdos 6.22 and 7.1 (Windows 98SE), to warrant the purchase of 6.22 msdos? My main use of dos would be to learn the 'behind the scenes' of Windows. Also learn to use command prompt commands to aid learning how to use Linux etc. I've got a copy of Peter Nortons book on msdos6.22, of how much use is the info in the book? Any sensible help or comments gratefully appreciated.

Up to version 6.22 install on FAT16 recognised up to 64MB memory
Version 7.xx underpinned W95A (CD and Floppy), recognises memory greater than 64MB?, essentially the same as 6.22
Version 7.1x underpinned W95B & C / 98 / 98SE (CD only) recognises memory greater than 64MB and install on FAT16 & 32. It is possible to install Windows 95B onwards and revert back to opening the Windows GUI from the DOS command line.
Version 8 underpins ME and is more intregrated into the Windows GUI
If you want to read about DOS further try these sites:

http://members.aol.com/axcel216The majority of the versions of DOS are 16bit Operating Systems (Windows 1,2,3,95,98,ME are Graphical User Interfaces on top of DOS)
WINDOWS NT (NT3, NT4, W2K, XP) family like IBM OS/2 has emulated DOS and a good tutorial on NT emulated DOS is here http://www.windowsitlibrary.com/Content/226/03/1.html
Last but not least all the DOS sites listed have a wealth of information and links to other sites and a search on GOOGLE with just MSDOS will produce several pages....
Good luck in your endeavours...
