Comment:
Does anyone know the differences, if any, between the dos 7.X that came with win 9X, and dos 8.0 that came with winME? Like any new commands, etc? And if there aren't any differences, why are they referred as 7 and 8.

I am sure others will add to the conversation, but as far as I know the main difference in WinDOS 8.0 is that Microsoft limited the command set NOT expand it...
For reasons only known to themselves, Microsoft disabled the System Format function within WinDOS 8.0 (As well as 'Real Mode' within Windows Me itself!
Because of these changes this makes WinDOS 8.0 less than an ideal candidate for a standalone system.
Microsoft themselves do not refer to these DOS versions as MS-DOS 7 or 8 As far as they are concerned they are integral components of Windows, not standalone versions of DOS
