Comment:

I had an old Packard Bell given to me.
That had win3.1 After making a bootup disk
for 3.1 (just in case) and then proceeded to
fdisk.
Now I cannot get the Cdrom to work.
I have tried to use the 3.1 boot disk
and found a driver from two different websites.
I can get the win95 boot disk to load but
I still have no Cdrom.
I know a little about win95 and 98, But very
little about Dos. I have opened several post
here, but I have not found anything that could help me.

Thanks to ALL
Ohdah

get the right driver for the CDRom
run edit, load config.sys

[common]
DEVICE=C:\CDROM\AOATAPI.SYS /D:IDECD000 /Q

make sure its looking for the right file (your CDRom dirver)

check that you'v got a copy of Mscdex.exe in boot set up

What I am asking is there a way I can get
win3.1 back and hopefully the Cdrom?
If not then: Is there any way I can load
win95 or win98 from a cd with another PC?

How do I find out what Dos system I have?

Thanks
Ohdah

Questions for reply from Topz

get the right driver for the CDRom: I have the right driver
run edit, C:\>edit Is this correct?
Then how do I load config.sys
(I don’t know many Dos commmands; could you be more specific)

? [common] ? I don’t understand the common in the brackets?

??? DEVICE=C:\CDROM\AOATAPI.SYS /D:IDECD000 /Q ???
(am not sure what you mean for me to do)

make sure its looking for the right file (your CDRom dirver)
how?
ck that you'v got a copy of Mscdex.exe in boot set up
autoexec.bat (Mscdex file is there but not autoexec file)
How do I get it there? I have another PC but it has win98 will that work?

c:\MSCDEX.exe /D:IDECD000
do I do this after I fix the boot disk?

Thank you, Topz

Reply:

At DOS c:\> prompt type edit {filename}, so type edit config.sys or edit autoexec.bat.
If the latter doesn't exist, edit will create it when you save the file.
