I just bought a dell latitude laptop, and had the seller put a brand new hard drive in it. I installed Dos 6.22 from the 3.5 drive with no problems. However, I need my cdrom drive to install windows and really get up and running. I'm an old dos guy, but i never really figured out MSCDEX. is that all I need, or will I need a special driver from dell too? Thanks

I tired that. If I do that, I can't even get a D:> if i try to access any drive other than C:> it attempts to access the floppy drive.

I know that a lot of laptops have odd drivers and won't work with generic drivers.

I can't find anything from dell but mscdex, and taht doesn't seem to do me any good.

I usually have success with ATAPICD.SYS on older laptops.
Make sure that your DOS directory actually contains the two required files - mscdex.exe and atapicd.sys

The line you need in autoexec.bat is
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001

and in config.sys
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ATAPICD.SYS /D:MSCD001

Good luck...Krystyna

I used the following driver to get the cd-rom to be recognized from DOS:

OAKCDROM.SYS

Just update the lines from the last reply to:

The line you need in autoexec.bat is
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001

and in config.sys
DEVICE=C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001
