Comment:

After booting a computer using a start-up disk, it is possible to run scandisk [C:>scandisk].

But the defragmentation of the C drive could not take place [C:>defrag]. The RAMDRIVE was E:, but even E:>DEFRAG C: didn't do the job.

the message 'Bad command or file name' appeared for both C:>DEFRAG and E:>DEFRAG C:.

How can one run the defrag program after booting from a start-up disk? is there any connection between the check disk command (CHKDSK /F) and the defrag command (DEFRAG)?

In order to run defrag, three files are required and they are probably not on your start up disk. Try DIR C:\DOS\DE*.* to see them.

Also I suspect your start up disc does not contain a path statement, so the pc cannot find them, wherever they are. Suggest running from your dos directory (if they are there) on the C: drive. e.g.
C:
CD\DOS
DEFRAG

Good luck - Keep us posted

Dos Defrag under Windows ME is not possible if you are trying to start it from the Windows folder. You would have to use a specifically designed 32 bits dos defrag program to perform this task.Good luck.

The Scandisk program on the startup disk is a DOS program. It is not the same Scandisk program you run after booting Windows. Micro$oft does not supply a DOS program that can Defrag a Windows FAT32 disk. There are a few third party programs around, actually standalone boot diskettes that can run a defrag type program from a boot diskette.

Don't run defag from dos on a windows operating system, it is a different version and will screw your file system, i know i ran it on a customers pc and wasnt thanked for it, its usually a full reload job..
