Defrag in DOS

I was told its possible to defrag in dos.When i boot to dos the c prompt i type in defrag i get a message this requires Microsoft Windows.I was told by someone that knows computers that you can do it in dos but how?I do have Windows 98SE.ver4.10.2222

I is possible to DEFRAG from DOS boot, but you need a DOS defrag program that can handle FAT32. These cost $ and are hard to find.
Best to DEFRAG from SAFE MODE.
Or use the defrag in the Nortons utilities.

In a windows o/s machine it is best to use defrag etc. that come with windows.
In a strictly dos machine, you have to use the defrag that came with dos itself. I think it was only available from version 6.??.

When upgrading DOS6xx to Win95, the old defrag & scandisk are renamed as part of the install because they can't be safely used under the new OS - for one thing, LFNs aren't supported.
Why does someone always have 'a friend' that tells them things are possible, but can't seem to explain how ;)

Hi, I suggest you get your hand on nortan speed disk for dos.. Its a great utility.
