Why do you want to run defrag in DOS (what is wrong with the Win98 one?).
If you really want to, you could try booting to DOS on startup (hold down both CTRL keys when the system is counting the memory, till a Startup Menu appears). Choose to boot to MS-DOS, then when the command prompt appears, run DEFRAG.exe from C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.

As above why do you want to defrag in dos because if you defrag in win then it does your whole drive so you will not gain anything by defragging in DOS (They do the same thing ???????)

The two that responded to this message are complete idiots!!! To defrag my main 2gig partition under dos takes about 10 minutes, under windows it takes a hell of a lot more that that! And besides that, defragging under dos guarantees that you wont need to start over in the middle due to some program writting to your harddrive. Defraging in dos is possible but it is just a bit more complicated than before. I boot up with a dos 6.22 disk (the pre-fat32 version) and run defrag. Two problems with this...I have a program that will back up and restore the windows Long File Names...This task must be observed otherwise you will mess up your computer as the registry will no longer be correctly linked to the right file. I also have 3 Fat16 partitions...If you are using fat32 the defrag program wont even be able to read your harddrive.

Ryan, you seem to know your stuff. I want to defrag my fat32 partition under dos. do you know of any freeware or professional programs that can do it? I found Partition resizer, it's 70k and it does EVERYTHING partition magic does.
Summary: I was told its possible to defrag in dos. When i boot to dos the c prompt i type in defrag i get a message this requires Microsoft Windows.I was told by someone that knows computers that you can do it...
Summary: The short answer is no and for Godsakes, don't try using a DOS defragmentor; it will truncate all of your long file names. If you are thinking of using defrag in DOS because it is taking forever in Wi...
