Comment:

Hi,
I inform everybodies that DD Archos Usb 2 dont't work with driver "USBASPI.SYS". It's is recognized physically, but not logically (not affect logic drive). So Norton Ghost don't work with it on DOS (Win 98).

When you say Norton Ghost, that uses PCDOS 7.1 revision 0 for the boot disks, have you tried using a different version of DOS??

There are other DOS drivers apart from the Windows derived ones from Norton/Iomega have you tried them??

It would be better to investigate then make definitive statements!!

If you do not like DOS then use Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage, no DOS boot disks whatsoever, therefore when it does not work you can post you comments in the Windows 9x forum and leave this forum for DOS. Norton has not been marketed for DOS for many years IT IS A WINDOWS APPLICATION!

What does this mean? Can you tell us what USBASPI.SYS displays with the /v option? Wha error messages do you get?

BTW - USBASPI.SYS will simply map a USB device to an ASPI device. After that, you need an ASPI mass storage driver like DI1000DD.SYS or NJ32DISK.SYS to map each mass storage device to a logical drive.

" ... So Norton Ghost don't work with it on DOS (Win 98)."

The dependency is actually more on your PC's USB interface and seldom on the USB device (unless it wasn't formatted in a way DOS will recognize). Do try again and update us on your results.

Norton Ghost IS indeed a DOS application... It's supporting applications may not be, but the program itself is indeed DOS. Again I wonder why you continue to try and split hairs about this issue..

michdaugh wether or not I should justify what I have posted is questionable!

If you feel I am splitting hairs then that is your perogative. Come on I want to read about DOS, not Batch Files, is that not programming?? Windows of any flavour can be posted in the correct forum, somebody will pick it up and answer in that forum.

I will contunue to make comments when I feel it is neccessary, like the blanket statement at the beginning of this thread, he has bought a product which does not do what Symantec state, then has a whinge because he has to use DOS, sorry but whatever way you look at it he has bought a Windows product for use in Windows! NOT DOS

It has been a long day and will say goodnight...

I would ask you to refrain from posting misinformation then. I will assume you have never used Ghost, because if you had, you would know that it is indeed a DOS application.

You say:

"Come on I want to read about DOS, not Batch Files, is that not programming??"

And I say DOS batch programming is VERY MUCH a DOS topic.... There is not forum on computing.net better able to handle this topic. Your gripe seems to be about what you want to read and learn about, but the purpose of these forums is to help people with specific questions. If you learn something from what is posted, then that is secondary to the purpose of the forum.

Normally I would say nothing about such a post, but you seem to do it over and over, and a lot of times when it is unnecessary (such as in this post). Now let me clarify by saying I have seen you help a lot of people with your posts, and for that you should be thanked. However, I think it does your credibility a disservice with these constant complaints about whether a post is off topic or not.

Just my $.02

Have you been able to check on our suggestion?

What does USBASPI.SYS display with the /v option? What error messages do you get?

Note that USBASPI.SYS will simply map USB mass storage devices to ASPI. After that, you need an ASPI driver like DI1000DD.SYS or NJ32DISK.SYS to map each ASPI mass storage device to a logical drive.

Archos products use ISD/Cypress and some other chips for their USB to mass storage so your issues are either on the interface (which would point to USBASPI.SYS) or the USB device (which would point to DI1000DD.SYS)

Hope this helps.

Hi madmaxUSB,

I return "Archos External Disk Usb 2" to the retailer, because there is realy a problem. I think, that is chipset not compatible. it's is confirm by support of Archos. But I confirm that with other External Disk Usb 2, like "Storex" and "Ibm" it works very well with "USBASPI.SYS" and "DI1000DD.SYS".

Best Regards.
