What do you hardcore computer users use for data recovery. What is the best.

For preventing data loss to begin with, I use DRIVE IMAGE by PowerQuest which is a DOS program which totally backs up and restores partitions. For recovering deleted files, I will first try UNDELETE, if that doesn't work, it may be worth a shot with a HEX editor such as Norton Diskedit to get back parts of the file. I can't really say much because your question isn't quite specific enough.

Different software packages will work depending on how the data was erased. Most of them only read the drive that has lost data so you can try different products until you find one that works:
1. PowerQuest Easy Restore 2. PowerQuest Lost & Found 3. Ontrack's Easy Recovery 4. Easy Recovery Professional 5. Undelete 2.0 6. Norton's Disk Doctor/Disk Editor
There are others. Each works a slightly different way. If one doesn't work, you simply try another. As I stated earlier, most of the products require you to have a different drive that you can save the recovered data to so the damaged drive never gets written to.
My web page as a generic data recovery program that you are welcome to try out.
