1. Make sure you're booting up using a Win98 boot disk before you run setup.

2. Windows 98 uses the FAT32 partition system. It can also use the old FAT16 partition system. Your error means that Win98 cannot find either a FAT32 or an FAT16 partition on your drive.

3. Partitioning is a system for dividing up the hard drive into manageable "chunks". There are numerous different partitioning standards. HPFS or NTFS are two partition standards not supported by Windows98. The drive you're using probably used to have Windows NT or Win2000 installed on it.

3. Run fdisk from the boot disk. Choose 4 and see what kind of partitions you have on the drive. Then, delete them and create a new FAT32 partition.

4. Remember, using fdisk, after you've made a change to a drive's partition, you must hit the "esc" key to exit fdisk, then reboot the computer for the changes to take place. If you don't exit fdisk and reboot, the changes will not be saved.

When fdisk says it can't read fixed disk, it usually one of these problems:
1. The disk is not correctly set up in bios. Go to the bios setup and install it properly.
2. The disk is too large for fdisk to understand it's proportions. This shouldn't be an issuel in Windows 98 as I don't think there exists that large disks (yet)
3. The disk is some obscure non-standard disk, disk like a HardCard
4. The disk is totally f*cked up

I go for number one. Boot up your computer and it will hopefully say "Press Del to enter setup" or something corresponding.

By the way, it's not polite to use Capslock.

Attempting to run 'D:\setup.exe' from my Mellennium ME upgrade CD-Rom (after starting from my 'boot disk'), the above subject error message is returned. Upon running 'fdisk' from my 'boot disk', it returns "No fixed disks present". Now what do I do ?

Hi I am having the same problem. When I try to run fdisk it says ERROR READING FIXED DISK. It will let me install ME but it won't run fdisk so that I can properly partition the drive. What is strange is that I had just used fdisk then this started happening.
Please Help!!!
