I'm currently trying to get Windows 3.11/MS-DOS 6.22 on my network. I'm using a D-Link DFE-530TX+ ethernet card, which came with drivers for WfW 3.11, and DOS. (This card is currently working great in Windows 95B and NT 3.51) After backing up my AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and Windows 3.11 directory, I upgraded to Windows For Workgroups 3.11. The card drivers installed perfectly fine, but after restart, it drops dead after the command 'net start' in run. (Meaning it locks up, and won't do anything other than Ctrl+Alt+Del) So, I deleted the WfW 3.11 dir, then restored my backups. Then I decided to try installing the network support in DOS, with the DOS drivers included with the card. Everything worked fine, but when it gets to the 'net start' command, it drops dead again! Any ideas or suggestions on what the problem is and how to fix it?

Freak,

Sometimes cards require a setup utility to run properly in DOS (3Com cards are famous for this). Search the driver directory for something like dlinkcfg.exe or setup.exe or something of that nature. Run this program (if it exists) and set the card to run under MSLANmanager or NDIS or DOS or something similar.

Other things to note:

Don't try to load a packet driver (for Internet) and a NDIS/ LAN driver. It'll crash everytime. Either do one or other, not both at the same time.

Also, you don't need to install the DOS NDIS driver for your NIC card if you're using WFW. The drivers are loaded in Windows only. There is no need to load these drivers in DOS.

HTH,
Michael

YES!!! Thanks!! I ran the diagnostic utility that was on the CD and it complained that my version of EMM386.exe was too old. (Was using the one that came with Windows 3.1) I switched to the version that comes with DOS 6.22, and no more lockup! Thanks! (I'll probably still go with WfW, since it'll be easier to set up, but that should probably work fine now, too.)

Minor followup: Windows For Workgroups 3.11 is now happily talking to computers running Windows 98SE and Windows XP HE. Woo hoo!

Freak,

Good deal, glad I was able to help. Have you given up on NT 3.51 and newshell yet?

First off, about the network, I think I spoke too soon about Win98... 98 see WfW, but won't open it, and WfW doesn't even see 98. Oh well, I figure that out later.

About NT 3.51 and NewShell, I haven't exactly given up on it, but I haven't messed with it in quite a while, since it had several bugs. I keep thinking of messing with it again. However, I have pretty much given up on finding NewShell version 2. I was searching for that for days, but couldn't find a single thing... Have you messed with it much lately?

There is a version 2? I hadn't even heard that? Is that a rumor? What was your source of information for that?

No I haven't played with it in a while. Although neat, I sometimes think why bother when I have access to NT 4.0. Plus I've started a Linux kick lately. It's pretty neat.

Hell I'm just praying some day that Calmira will support long file names, but it's almost a little too late since most files systems these days are NTFS.

Here's where I heard about version 2: http://www.toastytech.com/guis/index.html

I haven't been able to find it anywhere, though.

Your asking me abuot Newshell just put me in the mood to fiddle with it again... (That's where I'm at now) Plus it's Network Neighborhood icon works pretty well, and is useful, now that NT 3.51 is networked. The onlt NT4 I have access to is an evaluation 120-day use copy of NT 4.0 Server. Besides that I don't want to use that, it runs slower on this PC than NT 3.51 (with or without NewShell). So I just fiddle with NewShell now and then.

As for Linux... Eeech... >_< I haven't been in a good mood with Linux lately... Sometimes, when I'm in the mood for it, I like it, but it's been getting on my nerves lately. See http://www.computing.net/linux/wwwboard/forum/17619.html for an example...

It would be nice to see Calmira support LFNs, at least in NT. I'm not expecting to see it, though, since there aren't many NT 3.x users, and it doedn't really seem possible to do in Windows 3.1x.

Anyway, thanks again for the network help!

One more thing about LFNs: It would seem that it wouldn't be too hard to do, at least when running in NT. I've seen other 16-bit apps that support LFNs when running on a 32-bit system. (Willow Pond Media Rack, for example) One other interesting thing: 16-bit apps, including Calmira, show long filenames when being run in WINE under Linux. Weird...

Hmm... Never tried it... Maybe I should dig out my NT 4.0 server CD... I'm not sure that it'd work normally, but it may work it I replaced some of NewShell's files with NT 4's... Hmm... (Why didn't I ever think of this?)

Progress? Heh heh...

Nothing worked. Zip. Zero. Zilch. 99% of the files I tried caused crashes on starup, and the few that didn't, did no good. (For example, COMCTL32.DLL didn't make much of any change. A few buttons looked slightly different, but no bugs were fixed. I was hoping COMDLG32.DLL might fix some of the probs with the newer Open/Save dialogs that don't work in NewShell, but all that did was make the ones that did work quit working!

Oh well. I guess I'll have to live with the bugs when I want to play with NewShell. (Which is only occasionally, now being one of those times)
