I have a CD-ROM drive that won't work right now because the sound/CD controller card drivers will not install. When I type "install" which is the setup program, I get an error message:
"CPU error: Incorrect opcode. Killing process."
I don't get it. My CPU works fine. It is a Cyrix CX 486 66 MHz and the sound/CD controller card is a Sound Blaster 16. I did, however, manage to get the drivers at www.creativelabs.com (strange, because that card was the first sound card produced by Creative Labs). It is functional and my CD-ROM is also functional because it worked properly prior to this.
Please help,
jkid

I dont know if this has anything to help you, but the SB16 was like a 3 card made by Creative. the "Origional" SoundBlaster was the first.

The message "CPU error: Incorrect opcode. Killing process." doesn't really mean "CPU error" but "program error", which informs the user that the program is trying to execute invalid instructions and is stopped by the system (otherwise the system will hang).
You need to load the right driver.

My system goes back to the C:\>prompt after telling me the CPU error.

Not quite sure what you mean by
You need to load the right driver,
but there's my problem. I'm trying to install the proper CD driver. (which should be "SBCD.SYS"). However, it is not an archive, the files I need are actually inside that INSTALL.exe file, so I can't extract them. Otherwise I would do so.jkid

I have just downloaded and tested the ZIP package (300KB) containing the files SB16.SYS and INSTALL.exe from the following address:
http://www.dreamlandbbs.com/files/drivers/cdrom/CD_DOS2.ZIP
INSTALL.EXE works just fine. Perhaps your files are corrupt or something?
Also, the driver file SB16.SYS inside this ZIP archive is actually *outside* that INSTALL.exe file, thus you can also do so directly.
P.S. That error message is actually the DOS's protection, which is very similar to the following message in Windows 9x:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor."

I had a lot of trouble installing an old ISA SB16 card. Look at your card and find out CTxxxx number.
Go to this site
http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/drivers/welcome.asp
And enter the CTxxxx under the "Search by Product Code" box "Model Number:" and very very carefully read the download options on the screen. Do your downloads, expand them and once again carefully peruse the read me files and install the drivers in the order you are instructed.

"P.S. That error message is actually the DOS's protection
DOS doesn't have any kind of memory/device protection. I think that the error is due to an instruction not supported by the Cyrix CPU, those CPUs where known by they compatibility problems with Intel ones (AMD ones were much better because they where only improvements over the Intel designs).

dieymir,
You are *incorrect*! Unlike other versions of DOS, the full MS-DOS 7.10 (which is the DOS he used) does include a routine that provides this protection. Have you tried install MS-DOS 7.10 full version yet?
