I need to copy some files and directories about from one directory to another within DOS 7. However when i do so using either xcopy or xcopy32 it dosen't reconise the long file names and adds a ~ instead. How can i overcome this within DOS ??

I think you're limited to 8 characters in Dos

I believe PC- the crack writers made a utility to over come this. 1997? 98?

The name excapes me at the moment though.

A request on Usenet in on of pc-'s n/g will
bring a reply though.

Long since lost track (mentally) of what is in the Library as it goes back to when the wheel was invented......lol!

xxcopy.exe is a freeware program that improves upon the old reliable DOS xcopy program. It maintains long name/short name when it copies. I had a drive fail this morning at work in a computer. I interlinked it to another Win95 computer and used xxcopy to "clone" the second computer using the first computer's drive. I did have to redo the IPL but the drive cloning worked fine. Win95 booted right up on the problem computer without any long name problems.

One other way is to zip files with PKZIP 2.50 from www.pkware.com It stores long file names!

Also try LFN Tools from http://odi.webjump.com/ which displays Long Filenames in MS-DOS 7.0 'Real Mode' and also has LCOPY to copy LFN files as well.

But are there any graphical filemanagers that will work with long filenames (like the old Norton Commander)?
