I have converted a new hard drive to an external hard drive using the external enclosure with USB 2.0Kit.
Question1: How can I turn this external drive to a bootable disk.(I don't have a flopy boot disk.)
Question2: How can I copy some of my favorite programs to this new external drive?(I lost some of original program CDs, so I can't install them to the external drive). I am new in computer, please give step-by-step instructions. Thank you very much!

Bootable to what, exactly? Some (as yet unnamed) version of DOS? If you mean to start Windows from this external unit - wrong forum

Also: folks, don't put your message in the signature area, that's not what it's for. Better to leave it blank.

iboy,
yes, I mean start windows from this external hard drive. What shall I do?
Basically, I am trying to make a duplicate copy of my existing drive to the new external hard drive. Is this possible? Sorry about the signature, first time to use.
Thanks for reply.

Yes, well, Windows questions are best addressed in the appropriate Windows forum - this forum's focus is DOS (the Operating system).

You seem to want to clone or 'ghost' your existing drive - most drive manufacturer's provide their own utilities just for that purpose.

Although you may receive suggestions here, you will doubtless enjoy a better response in the (much busier) WinXP forum.

Oh, sure - you might be able to do it from DOS (or even Linux), but there are considerations, such as drive size, partition type, long filenames etc. Likely be simpler using either a manufacturer's utility or Windows application

I agree with jb. Look in your BIOS. Does it support booting to USB? If it does, wonderful...but by virtue of USB speed the booting will be painfully slow as compared to internal HD.
