Hi guys!

My mate is too scared to ask a forum, so I've taken the bull by the horns so to speak. He has two PCs, one with internet connection which he has used to download a 2Mb file and the other which is an old PC which he wants to put this 2Mb file on to. Each PC has a floppy drive, but nothing else to speak of, no network cards, no CD ROMs, no WinZip, etc. So he wants to put this file on to the old machine using floppies.

Now I'm pretty sure in my youth I managed to copy a large file over two disks, but I can't remember how I did it. Can anyone help?

Thanks in anticipation,
Mooski.

I always found it diffucult to use 'spanning' with any compression utility (although they are great in .. euhm, compressing)

but: ... there are some SIMPLE programs to chunck files into pieces, without the need to compress ..

mail me for more info

RAR 2.50 for DOS, and ACE 2.04 for DOS, include an easy to use text mode interface similar to Norton Commander, they are not very hard to use.

But maybe you can take a look at Split at http://www.geocities.com/detranssoftware/split.zip

OK guys, that's great. Thanks for your input. I'll try these and if we can't get these to work properly, no doubt I'll be back.

Thanks again.
Mooski.

Get a copy from Pkzip 2.50 from anywhere (it's shareware).
Put pkunzip.exe on the computer you are copying the file to. Try 'pkzip -& a:\something.zip [path to 2 MB file]' to compress the file.
On the other system, put in the 2nd disk first, and from the path that you want to decompress the file, run 'pkunzip a:\something.zip'... it will ask you to insert the first disk, then the second. The reason for putting in the 2nd disk first is that if you start with the first disk, it will ask for the last disk and then the first again.

Aside from that, I remember a simple program called SPLIT (the file was SPLIT60E but I downloaded it from some obselete bulletin board local to my area) that would split a file into a given number of chunks, or into chunks with a given size.

I nevr had much luck compressing files to span multiple disks, 1 out of 2 times there was a crc error. If I've got to span floppies I use the 'split file 'command on the toolbar of 2X Explorer. As well, it's a great proggie for moving files around with the dual pane. http://www.netez.com/2xExplorer., never failed me.....yet..Mike

get a cable and use DOS' Interlink program to transfer files from one computer to another. Interlink was included with DOS as far back as I can remember.

Interlnk appeared in DOS starting in version 6 - great utility, but it has problems with todays large hard drives/filenames.

File Maven for DOS is freeware, works fine, but no LFN support. On the same page you can d/l a trial version of Link Maven.

Never, ever had a problem spanning disks (?) using zip or arj unless the floppy was bad in the first place. I have a ton of software archived on floppies - even 5¼" - from years ago that's still intact.
