copy ns21.exe c:\documents and settings\serg\desktop\back up files\

and it came up and told me "The Syntax of the Command is incorrect." So what do i do now? I read online how to copy files and thats how i did it...and it wont copy. Please help me! Thanks in advance..

When using DOS to copy files you must use the short form of the file name and spaces are not allowed in DOS file names. Go to the directory where you want to copy from and do a DIR command. Then you will be able to see the short forms of the file and directory names. Use this short form in your copy command and all should go well.

Hey man when i Type DIR it doesnt give me the shortened version. Its probably because i am running XP. Is there anyway to figure them out myself or can i change some settings to show the shortened version? Thanks

Sorry, XP uses a DOS emulator, not actual DOS. Since I do not use or reccommend XP, I cannot help you. Perhaps you could get an answer in the XP Forum section.

Just type your copy command having care to surround the directories (and files) with blanks or special characters between " so:
...\"documents and settings"\blabla\"other directories"\...

IVO is right. You may also put the entire destination on the same surrounding quotes:

copy file.ext "c:\program files\what ever"

Be aware: you stated your OS as DOS. You're using CMD.EXE, which is WinXP's command prompt. That looks like DOS, because it looks like its command interpreter, COMMAND.COM. Nevertheless, you're not on DOS, not at all.

G'day,

I don't know about XP, but in WIN9X you do it this way.
DOS has a restriction of 8 characters for all file names (and 3 for the extention with files), so the method is to use the first SIX characters of the WIN9x filename and then add ~1 to the end.
Examples:
program files becomes progra~1
my documents become mydocu~1 OK??
You also have to lose the spaces ie don't count them.
Hope that clears it up.

regards,
Peter
