Okay. I have been stumped for the past week or so trying to fix this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a HD that is corrupt. It seems that the FAT tables on the drive are bad and scandisk is unable to fix the problem. When you boot to windows it says that the drive is unformatted. I have also used countless recovery applications to no avail. However, I have a LOT of data on that drive that I HAVE to have.

Luckily, when in DOS the computer is able to see the files and allows me to copy them to another drive that is healthy. Here in-lies the problem.

I need to be able to copy files from one drive to another in DOS and MAINTAIN the longname file format. I am copying an entire HD and I need to be able to keep the longname format for when I boot in windows.

If anyone knows how to do this in DOS, or has a utility that works in DOS that is able to copy files and keep longname formats I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thx.

-Morris

By default any version of Standalone 'MS-DOS and Compatible' does not support LFN, though there are 3rd party tools.

You do not advise how the hdd was first formatted and/or the windows version.

The fact that dos can see the files is strange.

Have you tried slaving the faulty drive and using the embedded dos that comes with W2000 or similar?

Have you tried W98 recovery disc which gives allows dos working?

Try copying all files in a directory e.g. using COPY DIR\*.* /v and see if the long names are carried over.

Good Luck -Keep us posted?

This really belongs in an appropriate Windows forum, but as the powers that be feel it is OK here then take a look at:

You only know when they put just "DOS" as the OS... it likely isn't.

Resist the temptation to close your request for help with semantically-null questions like “Can anyone help me?”

Believe me, I have tried just about every possible facit to access the files in windows. It just doesnt work. My question is not how do I go about recovering the files.

My question is what is a good DOS utility (3rd party of course) that will allow you to maintain LFN? Thanks.

btw, its a FAT32 partition

As mentioned above, xxcopy should work.

Also the installation disk included with new drives (or available on the manufacturer's site) has a drive cloning utility that preserves long file names.
