Abort, ...

That is strange. AFter you fdisk using a boot disk in drive A:, the next step is to format it & copy the system files to it & then your up & running. If you tried to look at any directories you will get an invalid media type until you format the drive but from what you are saying it wont let you format the drive after fdisk. Maybe some of the other experts here can help you with this.

Good Luck

You will not be able to see any directories after fdisk because it destroys all data on your hard drive even if you do get format to work. Fdisk/format destroys all data.

Fdisk again, delete any partitions. Then start fresh. Create a primary dos partition, and then make it active. (You'll get a message reminding you to reboot to effect the changes.) Do it. Then format the drive/partition;

format/c(/s) c:

(The /c tells format to re-check any sectors currently marked as bad. Some third party utilities can/will mark sectors as bad if they have any difficulty reading them. If you're putting a Microslop O/S on the drive, try to use the Microslop tools to set up the drive. There's info on this in the MS knowledge base.) The /s puts the bare-bones boot files (four of them) on the drive so its bootable if you want. This isn't necessary if you're loading an O/S as the O/S setup will do that anyway.
