Comment:
I had Windows XP installed, I left for the weekend came back and booted up my computer. I had troubles all night as my computer kept restarting. This began to happen even in safe mode, and eventually I couldn't even get into windows.
I decided to format my drive. Upon doing so at about 87% complete my computer was reset. Now when turned on the computer won't even boot. It just sits on a black screen, No Bios or anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated just to be able to boot the maching up!!
-Dave

I think you need to open up your PC and find out what Make & Model of Harddrive you have.

Once you have this information visit the manufactures web site (Do a search on Google with details) and download the manufactures diagnostic & repair utility. With this you will be able to reset the drive (If it is not damaged) to as it left the factory.

Then you can prepare the drive with FDISK to install your OS from scratch.

Hey, sorry this has nothing to do with the topic... but I couldn't find out how to make a new thread. Can you guys help me out? I am on windows 98 and a network. I want to know if it is possible to send files over the network through DOS or maybe telnet. Is there a way to chat? Anyhelp would be appercitated. I wouldn't mind an e-mail also but I rarely check it so I dont know if that would be good. Thanks for the Help!

Well I can't actually boot from disk because the computer doesn't even check the drive...what happens is I turn it on...it sounds good powers up and everything...sounds like the cd drive spins...no beep...no display...after about 10 seconds the computer seems to stop processing.

David - maybe the XP forum would be more appropriate?

Jeremy - click on the 'post' icon at the top of the page, either in the Win9x or Networking forums.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up. There's no sense being a damn fool about it.

Fair enough - but it really doesn't have much to do with DOS either - XP doesn't use 'real' DOS - more of a hardware question perhaps.

Conventional wisdom suggests disconnecting everything but video and try to get the machine to the POST screen, then reconnect components (one at a time) to determine the source of the problem.

If the machine can't POST then that's indicative of hardware failure.

Hi

David Its most likely to be a power supply issue. You could disconnect the hard drive and see if the system will boot.

However in the long run I think it will turn out to be the power supply - you could borrow one. With your vintage of machine be wary that if your machine is a Dell that you use a dell compatable supply.

david, this could very well be a power supply problem. before you replace it however make sure the cpu heatsink fan is working. it kinda sounds like an overheating issue since you do get some activity when you switch on.
