OS: ME
CPU/Ram: 750
Comment:

Specs are as follows:

Compaq Presario 5000US
· 750 mhz AMD Duron
· 448 mb RAM (bank0=64; bank1=128; bank2=256)
· 30 GB HD
· CD-ROM
· Floppy
· HSP56 Micro Modem
· Compaq Motherboard: 06E4h
o BIOS: Compaq786K1 11/21/2000

Below please find a list of the steps that I have done.
1. I added one 256 dimm and a 128 dimm of memory
2. I rebooted the computer it recognized the memory and ran ok
3. I replaced the AGP card that came with the system with a ATI Radeon 7000 AGP
4. I rebooted the system and it worked ok.
5. I booted to dos and ran fdisk and deleted all partitions
6. I rebooted and received a black screen (CD light lights up but no HD light or floppy light; monitor stays inactive)
7. I replaced the old card back into the system and same result.
8. I removed the newly installed memory and same result.
9. I added the memory back in different slots and same result.
10. I reset the CMOS by moving the jumper from 1&2 to 3&4 and then 1&2 (should I have restarted the computer before placing the jumper back to 1&2?) and same result.
11. I removed the battery from the mobo and replaced it; same result.

I am at a loss as to what to do. It was suggested to me by a tech earlier today to purchase their extended warranty (as you know mine is expired {90 days}) but I am fearful that their assistance would be like their website. Full of nothing. If you could help me or at least point me in the right direction I would be forever grateful!

Thanks!

Step 5:I deleted all partitions.
You have confused the issue here by missing a step. After step 5 you should have Fdisked again and formatted the disk with the /s command. Did you do this?

I appreciate the quick response. After step five I did as it says with step 6. It did not give me the opportunity to run a format. I also forgot to add that I did try to use the restore cd and a windows startup disk (after step 11) and neither worked. I got the same result. What is next?

OK, this is really weird but I was asked how many beeps the computer made when it attempted rebooting and I could not remember so I restarted it and it started rebooting to the restore disk. It then came up with an error message that said to contact technical support but that is ok because I was going to upgrade to windows XP pro anyway. Why do you think this happened? Any suggestions for going to XP pro and adding a ATI Radeon 7000 32mb AGP 4x/2x card? I am replacing the nVidia Vanta Lt 8mb that came with the computer."

These *@#!ing proprietry machines, I have had all sorts of probs with IBM,HP etc. They are setup as per factory and can be very annoying.
Ok. Do an Fdisk again and see if you have any partitions. Ifso is one active?
Try deleting and Fdisking again.
Good Luck!

If I were you, I would just boot up the pc with a Win95/98/me dos and see if you can get to the a:\. If you can do so, you need some work on partitioning you c:\. Use the fdisk.exe or gdisk.exe(from norton, it is way better than fdisk.exe anyway) to work on your partitions. use fdisk /mbr to restore your master boot record. Your master boot record might have problem.

My 5002ca is doing almost same thing, except I have not added any hardware for over a month. On day I powered it on and it hung just before the ME sign on came up. I attempted a reboot and it would not post or activate the monitor. I attempted to boot into safe mode and it hung again, no errors, just hangs.
The status is now that sometimes it will boot and I can sign in and then it hangs, sometimes it will not post and other times I can get into the bios and it will hang.
It hangs with the HD light on as well.
The only changes from default is a Maxtor 80G drive and a 128Mb DIMM.

Any help would be nice.
Thanks.
