Say what now??

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Are you talking about the hard drive label? In DOS type the command "label" and you will be prompted for a new hard disk label. In WinXP just float your mouse cursor over the hard disk label in the "My Computer" window and click on it and you should be able to change it.

Sure - if that's what's being asked, it hardly needs to be done from a command prompt (not much in Windows does).

G'day,

I think he might be talking about the "subst" command. How that works in XP I don't know, but it will re-assign hard drive letters and paths.
Hope it helps,
elric

Hi elric,

What subst has to do with:

"changes the operating system name assigned to a hard drive?"

is anybody's guess.

But /? is always a tasty choice.

As in:

subst /?

It's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

.. I've always liked that line.

Yes, this is the DOS forum - a repository of cryptic and ill conceived questions, half baked queries and undernourished theories.

Get used to disappointment ; )

jboy,

I see you very wisely stayed out of that fiasco with nearly 40 replies and nothing done.

I decided not to report the OP, not because he seems likely to get better, but because he is so far out there others can learn how not to cuonduct themselves. And to not get help.

Well.. I kind of regret letting my buttons get pushed like that, and probably should have just shuttup. Sure - posts like that can be a good object lesson (on how not to behave).

I do appreciate the supportive words from the rest of you.

jboy,

There are a few threads running now that I "sussed out", as the Brits say, as going nowhere. Not as offensive, but equally goofy. Completely oblivios to suggestions and requests for accurate info.

In one, after a dozen or more replies the guy finally let it slip that the problem HD had a drive overlay.

Some days when my cheese is about to fall off my cracker, along comes a very carefully worded and accurate request and I figure maybe all is not in vain.

Oh, to be sure, those are something of a rarity. The ability to express one's thoughts clearly and succinctly seems to be a lost art anymore - the saddest part is that all these folks are using computers, tied into an unprecedented source of knowledge & information - yet simple English words often confound them.

Tie that into whatever mishmash of computer 'smarts' they think they have, it's a wonder anything gets accomplished at all.

Still, it's not all bad, there are a few bright spots - I've learned more here chasing down answers to obscure problems than just about any other resource - and it's proven to be quite an insight into human nature.

You tell me.

If he comes back.. great. If he can provide an explanation of his question.. even better - although I deem both of those events as somewhat unlikely (but you never know)
