EVERYTIME I START MY COMPUTER IT SAYS "TYPE IN THE COMMAND INTERPRETER (E.G.,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)" IT WAS WORKING FINE BEFORE AND NOW I CAN'T GET IT TO DO ANYTHING. I HAVE TRIED START UP DISKS AND NORTON EMERGENCY RESCUE DISK, BUT I HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE ON HOW TO FIX IT, OR WHAT CAUSED IT. THANKS!

Sounds like something corrupted your command.com. Boot up with a boot disk of the same operating system as you have installed on there (ie. DOS 6.22 if you have a DOS 6.22 machine). Make sure you have the file "sys.com" on the disk, and when it finishes loading, type "sys a:\ c:
". This will load fresh copies of the files "io.sys", "msdos.sys" and "command.com" onto your machine. Remove the boot disk and reboot. One note, PLEASE don't tell people to format their machines for simple problems like this unless there is no better way.

Ignore "me" and "jutta". They are acting like spoiled, stupid children. Formatting your disk will erase everything you have and is not the solution to this problem and neither will the keylock suggestion.
Your c:\command.com is missing or has been replaced with a version of command.com that is not compatable with the other bootup files (io.sys & msdos.sys). You need to boot up using a bootable DOS 6.22 floppy. Then use the sys.com command to transfer the DOS 6.22 operating system to your hard drive:
sys.com c:
sys.com has to be on the a: floppy drive and you need to be at an a:\ prompt to start this command. You can't use sys.com from the hard drive.
After sys.com has transferred the DOS 6.22 operating system to the hard drive, it should once again be bootable.
