Is it possible to change the Volume Serial Number of a NTFS-formatted harddrive?
Ex. in Debug.
I have a program on one of my servers, which is licensed to one HD's serial number. However after a power-failure, I had to reformat the HD, and that changed the serial number value.....

There is a program called rebrand....
see below. If memory serves there is also a means to do it through dos, but I have not yet located the file. (Can't remember the file name)
If this would be of help I will gladly email you a copy...........????
W.L.
ReBrand.Exe (For Windows 95 Only)
-----------
The above small utility carries out a simple task if needed.ReBrand can change your User Name & Company and save changes to the Registry
Files. It will even change your Serial Number, This function is protected by a Tick
Box to the left of SetProductID Also. Click a Tick into this box if you wish
to change it. (Otherwise your ProductID will be grayed out)WARNING
-------
Once you click Brand, Any changes will be written directly to the Registry.
If you wish to change them again, or change them back again, you can do so.
However if you did not make a note of your original ProductID it will be lost
forever. You have been warned.

First off I do not feel that this a a DOS problem at all, however - I have a copy of REBRAND.exe in the Windows 9x section of my PowerLoad Resource Pages which does what World Library says and no more. I do not think it will solve Dennis Andersen's problem anyway as it does not change the volume label anyway. Also a NTFS formatted harddrive is for Windows NT anyway not Windows 95. I would repost this problem on the NT forum if I were you. (If you have not already done so!)

I agree with Mick on this. NTFS volume labels cannot be changed. That is why your program used it in the first place! And it is more of a NT problem than DOS or Windows. If it was a DOS Volume Label it could be changed with the likes of Norton Utilities. But try with the NT group, they will tell you more I am sure of it.

Just wondering.....
I would guess that the program is not on cd.Must be on floppy? yes? It it Microsoft?
Wondering how the install program knows the h/d is different. Perhaps there is a simple work around.
Yes even contacting the vendor and explaining the problem. Microsoft has sent me a number of programs on cd after the floppys fried from to many installations.
Just my own opinion, but if the proggie is ligit, the vendor has an obligation.
If not a work around can be found.
What is the name of the program?
W.L.

Oops sorry. And thanx :)
Yes, I thought it as being a DOS Q because I was steaming around in Debug. But I'll try to repost this in the NT-group.
I could as "World Library" contact the vendor of the product. However they aren't known for quick responses.
