The quick way is to go to www.bootdisk.com and download a Windows98 bootdisk image, and make a win98 bootdisk. It will then start your cdrom drive.

Go to bootdisk.com and download a boot disk that matches your windows version.

I have the exact same problem. The thing is that a win9x boot disk only has GENERIC DRIVERS. So if you have a CD ROM drive that is not supported by these drivers you have to find them elsewhere.
This is still a problem for me because i dont know how to install them in dos.

This question comes up over and over. If or when you know the location of the driver file for the CD-ROM you enter a device line and path to it in the config.sys.(DEVICE=C:\BIN\CDROM.SYS if your file was CDROM.SYS and it was in the BIN directory) IF the drive is SCSI there will usually be two files. Then you also need a C:\DOS\MSCDEX line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT if DOS is where MSCDEX.exe is.
ASPI lettering means these are universal SCSI drivers. An example of an actual boot disk device lines is: DEVICE=A:\ASPI4DOS.SYS /D (The 4 is 4X ROM)
DEVICE=A:\ASPICD.SYS /D:ASPICD0
And in the Autoexec.Bat:
A:\MSCDEX /D:ASPICD0
Hopefully this will help once you locate your CD-ROM driver file or files.
