Hello,
I just got some older computers, so I could play some dos games. One game is on a cd and the computers will not recognize D: (cd-rom drives) in dos. I saw another forumn for something similar but am not sure the answer is there for me. I think I have dos 5.0.
One cd-rom drive is a sony 20X CDU611
The other is also a sony (unkown speed) CDU77EIf anyone has any drivers for dos that woould help me see the cd-rom drive or anything that might help please let me know.
Thank you very much,
Krek

Thank you for your help, but there has been one hitch. It is probably my fault but now my computer before it starts windows 95 says ECS(R) IDE BUS CD-ROM Device Driver Version 1.80 (C)Copyright Elitegroup Computer Systems Co., Ltd. 1994, 1995 CD-ROM drive not ready. Then it asks me (A)bort or (R)etry : If you could help me that would be awesome thanks again.

When you install a cd-rom drive on a dos pc, you have to:-
a) connect cd power and interface leads
b) set straps on cd, possible also hdd if on same interface lead.
c) modify config.sys
d) modify autoexec.batThe fault message you are getting rather suggests one of these steps is either missing or incorrect.
Good luck - Keep us posted.

That little program has never failed to initalize a cd-rom for me. I have had trouble with older bios' seeing the cd and you can try different settings like none (often works) or auto or cdrom if you are lucky enough to have those settings.Assuming the bios is ok, check the jumper settings on both your hard drive and cd-rom. Some hard drives have a setting for single drive (master) or master with slave. The cd will be set as slave on a single ide motherboard. One other caveat; if the hard drive is set to cs (cable select) try setting the cd at cs too. Make sure the cables are plugged in properly and finally you may want to add the ecs directory to your path statement; here's a before and after of how my 386's autoexec.bat file would look:
Before:
@ECHO OFF
LH /l:0;1,45456 /s C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.exe /X 2048 128
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS;C:\PS;C:\PKUTIL;%PATH%
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
REM========ECS IDE CD-ROM Install Modification - Begin========
LH /L:1,36544 C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.exe /S /V /D:ECSD003 /M:10
REM========ECS IDE CD-ROM Install Modification - End========
C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM
CD\
MENUAfter:
@ECHO OFF
LH /l:0;1,45456 /s C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.exe /X 2048 128
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS;C:\PS;C:\PKUTIL;C:\ECS;%PATH%
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
REM========ECS IDE CD-ROM Install Modification - Begin========
LH /L:1,36544 C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.exe /S /V /D:ECSD003 /M:10
REM========ECS IDE CD-ROM Install Modification - End========
C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM
CD\
MENUAll we're doing is adding C:\ECS; to the fourth line in this example. I've only had to do this once. So, check and double check the cables to the cd-rom and the jumper settings for both drives. Jumper settings are normally written on the drive label. Let us know how it works.
