Reply: (edit)Same problems as... ? Everything would seem to cover a lot. Have you tried a different disc in the CD drive? tried cleaning the CD drive with a cleaning kit? checked the cables for the CD drive to ensure they are not loose or improperly connected? It could be that the drive is bad or failing - might want to try a different one, if possible Confusion reigns

Reply: (edit)I think you are not stating all details relating to your problem. What you advise, suggests you are booting from the W98 startup floppy, *AND* during this process it is trying to access the cd drive. However, I thought the cd drive is not used at all during this process, as it creates a ram drive (drive C:) containing various diagnostic aids. Good luck - Keep us posted. Please provide further info.

Reply: (edit)"cdr101 not ready reading drive d" If you're booting from a 98 bootdisk, no matter what option (1 or 2) you choose at the boot menu (other than the readme help file, 3) you will get a ramdrive created. If you have only one physical hard drive with one partition, the ramdrive will be D:. Your cdrom will be E: (and, depending on the boot disk,) up to Z:. If the hard drive is not recognized properly in cmos the ramdrive will become C:. Can you explain the steps (exactly) that you are taking to get this error message? How old is the system? Is the cdrom drive an atapi drive or proprietary drive? (Hooked up to a sound card or other small interface card.)
