In general, are CD RW drivers available for DOS? Would there be any suggested drives to purchase for this purpose? I have heard that you can read but not write, but it seems strange to me. Can I be enlightened?

Yes you can get them to read and wright under dos,and you can try them before you buy

I must try that Goldenhawk software again. Now to your basic question. To read
CD-ROMs in DOS you need to load a driver in the config.sys unless you use Windows ME or later which applies the windows driver to the dos prompt because there is no real dos.
If you use the universal driver from the Windows 98 startup disk, the config.sys line is DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001. Then, of course you add /D:MSCD001 after a MSCDEX line in the autoexec.bat. To write to a CD-R
requires commercial software of some kind. No DOS software to record CDs has been available for years that I can find. In fact I cannot find a CD recording program to write to CDs from Windows 3.11 for that matter.
I tried Goldenhawk several years ago and found some bugs in it that destroyed several blank CDs. But it is the only DOS program for writing to CDs that I know of.
