I have recently purchased a compaq deskpro 6000, with no operating system. When I installed DOS 6.2, it disconnected my cd rom drive. How do I recover my cd drive?

Get a DOS 6.22 boot disk from Mick C's web site and see if it is able to load you CD-ROM. If so, we can copy the 'Universal' driver off of the boot disk and have your computer load it on boot. Go to his site, click MS-DOS Resource Page, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the link for 622EBD.EXE. Extract it to a formatted floppy by typing (in the same folder as the file) '622ebd a:' [Enter] with a 1.44 MB floppy in the A: drive.

Forgot the important part - and then boot with that disk and see if it says it loaded a CD-ROM successfully.

Thank you for the reply. My system now just tells me that it a non-system disk, replace and strike any key to continue. Do I need to add/remove any lines to config.sys or autoexec.bat? What is the only necessary commands here?

Boot from your hard drive, type sys a:
This will make your diskette bootable.

Okay, that got me a little further, I think. Now the screen says "system transferred", but still no "cd" lines are in my autoexec or config files. What next?

hello,

what you will need to do is edit your config.sys file and autoexec.bat files and add the following line.

You will need to get a hold of your cd rom driver file so you can add it into the dos directory.

if you have not got it try www.bootdisk.com and see if you can download a boot image from there or if you no the vendor of the cd rom driver go to there website and download the driver. failing that if you have any other cd rom drivers at hand try them. I know from experience that soom driver work with more then on drive.

config.sys

device=c:\DOS\cdrom driver name here.sys /d:cd-rom

autoexec.bat

C:\DOS\mscdex.exe /d:cd-rom

this will make dos see your cd rom drive.

Hope it helps
