CD Rom Driver Install Pgm Says Please Install MSCDEX

I am trying to resusitate an old Pentium for a friend. My experience is extensive but it has been years since I've really messed with DOS, plus I seem to have thrown out all my old DOS reference manuals. This PC had nothing on it when I started. I did an a: disk boot and loaded MS DOS 6.22. Then I downloaded the appropriated CD Rom Drivers from the internet. Now when I run the CD Rom Driver install program it aborts and reports "MSCDEX is not installed and you cannot use CD-ROM. Please install MSCDEX."
MSCDEX.exe is in the DOS directory and the autoexec.bat file provides the path statement for the DOS directory.

Copy the *.sys file off of the install disk manually to wherever then add the appropriate lines to autoexec.bat and config.sys. If you need to know what those lines are, just ask...
