Can't load dos 5 because partitions

I've just format a hard drive of a 486 computer, it won't let me reinstall dos 5, it says my partitions are still in use, what does this mean?

Yep, tried that but now I c an't get my primary dos partition to be my entire hard drive. any clues how to do this?

If you want the C: drive to be the entire drive under DOS 5 (less than 2Gb total) then you must use FDISK to remove all partitions (both Primary and Extended), and then create only one Primary partition and make it active, then FORMAT C:\ /S it.
If the drive has had a HPFS (OS/2) or some other type of file system partitions installed on it, it may be necessary to erase sector zero inorder to allow DOS 5's FDISK to partition the drive.
You also need to make sure the BIOS is setup correctly and sees all of the drive.

got that, done, thank you. now the problem is "i have a creative labs CD rom", and sound blaster, when loading the sound blaster disk, tells me it doesn't recogonise the internals? do you know what this means, or is the machine basically stuffed?
