Really a question for the XP forum.

Try booting from a Win98 bootdisk and proceed with the format, although there may be other consideratons. AFAIK the XP CD should be able to take care of the format

Why don't they make computers that will do what we think we want them to do?

You DO NOT fix, repair, reinstall, format, fiddle, screw, or otherwise MESS WITH STUFF on an XP system by using MSDOS, 95/98/ME, any more than you would use Linux/Xenix/Unix/CPM, or something off of an (ohmyGod) MACINTOSH system to do so.

WHEN you fiddle, screw, format, or otherwise manipulate an XP system you use X tra P utrid based "stuff"------------

and that means, in this case, your XP CD

To be sure, 98 format will only allow FAT32 - some folks will partition with DOS fdisk (bit of a goof on my part).

To all of our misguided XP posters:

DOS is not the answer to your XP problems, the CD does all. If not, then there are other issues which are much (much) better addressed in the WinXP or Hardware forums

I don't think it's going to change anything, but sure, it'd be better for all if those posts were made in the appropriate place.

The days of using DOS to do an 'end run' around Windows are over, but the idea's taking a while to catch on.

Oh, yeah - Happy 2005!

name,

Maybe you don't use DOS to fix / trash winders, but many of us do.

And for a forgotten NT password, there's nothin' better than unix.

M2GO:

Why do you keep argueing the toss, this is one of the last accessible standalone MSDOS and compatible forums along with Win3.x, therefore can you not just accept that any post relating to DOS/Command Prompt should be moved to the appropriate forum as stated by the posters operating system. There are cetainly a lot of knowledgable responders who never visit this forum, but in Windows forum they show a understanding of the command line prompt and it usefullness to repairing unlike yourself.

So please make a new years resolution and allow us DOSSERS to have this forum for Standalone MSDOS and compatibles

rogerashley,

Why do you keep *arguing* (note the proper spelling of the word) with M2GO? This is the second or third posting in which I've seen you lash out and trash him. His response #6 was a general comment in response to "name", not this forum or YOU. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and it's a Constitutional right to express it.

While I understand that XP questions regarding DOS should not be posted here, and I support this as well, a gentle re-guidance to the OP is all that is required. I've seen several of your posts in which it's almost vehemently stated. You don't own this forum.

You do possess knowledge which I respect, it's just that you seem to get up on the wrong side of the bed every day.

So please make a new years resolution and lighten up a bit.

I only want responders to stand united, that is not a lot to ask.

I am fed up with M2GO as he recently had a go without fully reading my response which as requested by other responders did include a LINK to the answer as well as pointing out they were in the wrong forum. Though this is not the first time he has hijacked a respone of mine or one of my colleagues who actually visits this forum.

Yes it is argueing, I do have an O Level in English Language thankyou, though it was many moons ago.

As to lighten up, that is poppy-cock, I am very laid back, just do not suffer fools gladly.

I will keep responding to such time as JW deems I am not welcome.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

As a newbie to computing.net and as a user who needs machines with DOS and machines with windows I cannot understand why intelligent people seem to enjoy arguing ( *see note below) and flaming other intelligent people.

I have no doubts that you all know a lot more than I do but can you not accept that different users have varied reasons for using different tools and methods.

If a question is posted in the wrong forum is it not better to gently point out the error rather than sending you blood pressure through the roof?

I moderate on a few electronics forums and oversee a few heated debates but never come across such deliberate antagonism.

* Spelling.

The correct spelling is ARGUING.

As a Brit - and we have some very funny spellings - with an O Level I can assure you the the correct spelling for the past 50 years or more is ARGUING.

Feel free to check various online dictionaries as you wish.

To all that may read this...

May the rest of your life be a happy one.

Ron.

Ron,

I'd be interested in reading an electronics forum. I know more about trons than PCs.

Cheers,
