I've spent the evening trying to do a clean install
of Windows ME on my Toshiba notebook.
Anyway, to make a long story short, I need to edit
MSDOS.SYS so that it will boot in DOS instead of
Windows, as I have already wiped Windows from
the system.I know the commands to change attributes in
DOS, but every time I try to change MSDOS from a
read-only file, I get the message "Not resetting
hidden file." I can't change it from being a hidden
file either. Is there anything I can try in order to fix this? I'm
stuck in the water until I change one binary setting
in MSDOS. Any help is appreciated!

ATTRIB -S -H -R C:\MSDOS.SYS
But you should know that simply adding "BootGUI=0" in MSDOS.SYS won't work in WinME without a WinME DOS patch.

Thanks, Wengier, for the command line, but that is
the same command I've been trying to use! It's
frustrating because something is preventing me from
resetting the attributes of MSDOS.SYS.As for the Windows ME DOS patch - I don't have that
but it shouldn't be a problem as there is no Windows
currently installed on the hard drive.Anyone else have suggestions?

Okay, I'm an idiot. I must have done something last
night incorrectly because now that ATTRIB command
works. Yay!So I've edited MSDOS.SYS to "BootGUI=0". But the
computer still boots up from the hard drive looking
for Windows instead of booting into DOS. Should I
change some of the Paths in MSDOS.SYS to get it to
get straight to DOS? Help!

I have already said that this can't be done without a WinME DOS patch even if there is no WinME GUI at all.
Or, you can download and install MS-DOS 7.10, which is better than WinME DOS. More information, please look at:
