Hello there,
I have a HDD that is formatted in FAT32 format and I have Win98se. I have the need for DOS to be installed and I would like to know if it will be possible for me to do it with my current HDD. I would lnot want to format or fdisk my HDD just for this task. Is Partition Magic going to help me here? Can I make a partition other than C:\ that will hold DOS only? Can I do it without having to format my HDD?
I am quite lost here, please give a hand.Thanks.

You could use Partition Magic to create another logical drive (D:), format it, and install your Dos there.

Hi there,
Could you be a bit more specific as to how I use this software? I have never used it before, so a quick explanation from you will be greatly appreciated.thanks,
LIOR

Short answer: No.
FAT32 is not supported under DOS and while I've seen some third party add-ons that let you read from and sometimes even write to a few alien file systems (including HPFS, ext2FS, and NTFS), I've never seen any third party solution that would actually allow you to boot DOS and use it on a FAT32 partition. I just can't imagine how this could be done practically.
Instead, you might want to consider using FAT12 and FAT16. These are almost universally supported and practically guaranteed to work with just about anything.

Andrew, since I wouldn't want to give a bad advice, couldn't Lior add a partition, format it in FAT16 and install Dos there?
If I remember correctly I had FATx on C: & NTFS on D: on one HDD once, working fine.

Short answer: Yes.
MS-DOS 7.10 and up all support FAT32 and will allow you to boot from a FAT32 partition.
Third party DOSes; PTS-DOS, FreeDOS and the latest DR-DOS beta all have internal FAT32 support as well.
lior why not just boot straight to DOS from your current partition, and then boot to Windows only if you feel like it by typing "WIN", you can do this by modifying, or adding this under [Options] in MSDOS.SYS:
BootGUI=0
- W0rm
- http://jason-n3xt.org/dos

ok if the hdd is foramted in fat32 will the setup program start at all ? i have werid problem i have the DOS on floppies and when it asks me to reboot the computer it wont boot at all

Let's start over... While W0rm is correct that all Microsoft DOSes above 6.22 do support FAT 32...There is no real setup for these programs. So if you are trying to install DOS 6.22 on a FAT 32 drive then it won't work. Most likely it will want to delete the partition on the drive and repartition it to FAT 16. You have to be very careful about installing DOS 6.22 because it can callously delete your partitions without much of a warning unless you pay close attention to what the setup program is telling you.
To create an MS DOS 7.10 installation do this:
Download a windows 98 bootdisk (get it from www.bootdisk.com, which really links to W0rm's site).
Boot the pc with the diskette, issue this command:
sys c: a:
This will essentially 'install' the minimal components of MS DOS 7.10 which is command.com io.sys and msdos.sys, it will also prepare the boot sector of the hard drive so it's bootable. Create a directory called DOS on the hard drive.Next get a hold of a windows 98 or 95 installation and copy everything from the c:\windows\command directory to the dos directory on your hard drive.
Next grab a windows 95 or 98 CD from somewhere and copy all the files from the tools\oldmsdos directory to the same DOS directory of your hard drive. Now create a file with edit.com called autoexec.bat with these contents:
path=c:\dos;c:\
This file should reside in the root directory of your hard drive.Now create a file config.sys with these contents:
device=c:\dos\himem.sys
dos=high
This file should also reside in the root directory of your hard drive.Now reboot your computer and you have a DOS 7.10 installation complete with FAT 32 support!!
Good luck!
-Michael

Look if you have Windows 98se installed you ALREADY have MS-DOS 7.10 as well!
Or if you have no OS installed use the Windows 95B or 98 Bootdisk and System format your drive to get DOS
SIMPLE
Also as an addition to michael advice above. Get hold of a copy of OLDDOS.exe which contains all the MS-DOS 5 & 6 commands left out of 7
Bootdisks & OLDDOS.exe can be found at:
http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk

if you wish to call me a fool, then ok. i noticed you lot forgot about the eXtended Operating System Loader project, namly, a program that installs into your hdd to give the option of booting from a specific partition, try it at www.xosl.org.
i use it for swaping between win98,win3.11, and nt 3.51.hope this helps. . .

If you plan on using fdisk to make a FAT 16 partition use a 16 bits OS like MS-DOS 6.22. These 16 bits systems don't operate on a 32 bits FAT 32 partition.
