when i try to run any diagnostic DOS utility from a flopy disk I get a message that says c drive is not accessible. The computer was ifected by the NYB virus. I thought I corected the problem running the Norton virus program but since then I can't seem to locate my c drive. I have an IBM thinkpad lap top with a 150 mghz hard drive and I use 98SE windows. Any suggestons?

Boot the computer with a virus free copy of the Win98 startup disk.

Fdisk - remove all drives and recreate them. Format c: /s and your back in business.

DON'T FDISK OR FORMAT IT, you'll loose everything and have to reinstall it all over again. To get rid of the NYB Virus, You will need a CLEAN Windows98SE boot disk. Write protect it, boot from the A: drive, then run FDISK/MBR, that will repair the master boot record and remove NYB. Let me know if you need any more help.

I fought this virus for one month when I bought this machine from a thrift store & found out 2 days later it was infected. I still can access my c: drive though. I believe I have gotten rid of it hopefully. I tried the fdisk/mbr thing but Norton still reported it was there. I also tried format /u. Deleted all partitians & created new ones. I have yet to try Nortons wipe disk because I have been leaving a test disk in the pc & scanning the disk on another & everything has been coming out fine. A person from another forum said Norton is probably still detecting some trace of the virus on the hard drive but if the test disk is coming out ok after being scanned that it cant be transmitted. That NYB virus is hard to get rid off. Good luck!

OK I did the fdisk/mbr command
Now it tells me that "new partition table has been written to disk"
what do i do next? should I start the computer again without the flopy disk or do I
have to do something more before that..
thanks

You can now just reboot your computer without a floppy and everything should be fine, that is unless you have wiped the HDD, in whih case you'll have to reinstall DOS and Windows.

my hard drive is working ok...I think...
I checked it with an IBM program which is build in with the BIOS and is ok
do you think my documents on the C drive are still retrivable?

MEL, it's quite likely that you've been booting from a bootdisk that is infected with the virus...
