bootproblem after using scandisk

I was having some minor read problems on my system, which is a x486 system running msdos 6.22. I ran scandisk which found some bad sectors and marked them. However the system now no longer boots and gets hung when msdos is starting...I think that the FAT was not properly updated when scandisk marked the bad sectors. Who can help me out.I urgently need some data that is stored on the system.

That seems unlikely - unless there's physical damage to that part of the disk (which is fairly serious/fatal)
Have you tried restoring the system files? Boot from your 622 floppy and enter:
sys c:

More likely scandisk "repaired" some clusters on the disk by "moving" them and using zero filled cluster as it could not read the bad one. If this happened to be in one of the files required for booting your system, it will just go off into the weeds and hang.

Yeah, the files for booting O/S's are placed in specific areas of the disk. As JackG stated, if ones been moved......
And as jboy stated; "fatal" is usually a key word in these instances.

If the FATs don't match, scandisk (or other disk repair tool) should catch that and try to correct it. I'm guessing maybe IO.SYS or MSDOS.SYS became fragmented or corrupted during the repair - sys 'should' fix it, 622 is not quite as fussy as other DOS versions.
Damage to the area where the partition table etc is kept, near the beginning of the disk, can render a drive unusable.
