OS: Windows 95 (enhanced)
CPU/Ram: Pentium (R) 166MHz
Comment:

Trouble when booting up. MSCSD box and Windows cannot find FILES32.VXD left on screen. Can get rid of these two by clicking on cancel. However, the fault will not let me get into any of my files on the C & D drives. The computer will not let me use the original Compaq RESTORE CD so I cannot get back to the original factory conditions. Also my local computer shop cannot solve the problem. I would be very grateful if anyone out there could help solve this fault.

Get a boot floppy at

bootdisk.com

boot up and type:

dir c:\windows\files32.vxd /s

[enter]

Then we can go on to the next smooth move.

FWIW, maybe those guys in the local shop should get a new hobby.

Seems to be viral in nature - Pretty Park is indicated.

If you can start in safe mode, then run an AV scan, otherwise you may need a DOS based virus scanner, such a F-Prot

Not sure why your are posting here in the DOS forum - while you may find the solution to your problem, this issue would be better addressed in either the Windows 95/98 or the Security & Virus forums

Many thanks for your help Mechanix2Go.
I used my original starting up disk to boot up, then typed in your suggested dir c:\windows\files32.vxd/s then pressed Enter. Unfortunately I got the message FILE NOT FOUND. Can you help in the next stage.

Again many thanks for your help so far.

"The Pretty Park virus creates the Files32.vxd file, and then copies the Files32.vxd file to the Windows\System folder of your computer."

A virus scan is indicated... finding that file.. not so much.

Hi M

It happens ; )

While it may be a good thing that the file can't be found, it does seem that the system is still affected/infected. If a machine is incompletely disinfected, there may still be pointers to the virus which would need to be removed - it's not clear if that is the case here, but since "the fault will not let me get into any of my files on the C & D drives." (whatever that may mean exactly) a thorough AV scan would be advisable.

Holistic - while help can be found all over Computing.net, it's usually better to post in the forum that's the 'best fit' for your problem or Operating System.

I have to agree that your local techs sound like a bunch of slackers.

Many thanks for all those that sent in suggestions about my ‘booting problem. I am pleased to say that I used a Pretty Park fix. This got rid of the files32.vxd problem that the computer shop introduced when they failed to cure the original fault. I am now back to being able to operate the computer within certain limitations. I still have the original problem of the MSCSD warning box coming up on booting, and have noticed that in Control Panel the SYSTEM ICON is missing. The fault is also stopping me getting into Device Manager, Display, Printer Utility etc.

Thanks again for all your help.

That's good - one thing at a time.

While I'm not certain I know what you mean by 'MSCSD', you may wish to seek a solution in the Windows 95/98 forum.
