Sorry for the stupid question, I'm no expert... My system is based on Wengier and Roy's modified MS-DOS 7.10. During booting up, the system generates messages which I try to read, but they disappear too quickly. What can I do to make messages appear gradually and slower, so that I be able to read them?

I don't know if this will help at all. Try pressing F8 on startup. It may go into single line execution mode like DOS6.22 where it will display each line in turn and ask you whether you wish to execute it.

It's a 486. How fast can those messages blow by?
When it boots to the c:\> prompt you can EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT and add a line with just the word PAUSE. So if your autoexec.bat had:
line 1 line 2 line 3
you could change it to:
line 1 PAUSE line 2 PAUSE line 3 PAUSE
and it would pause after executing each line, allowing you to see the response.
I don't think you can use PAUSE on the config.sys file. But maybe the above is enough.

DOS 7.10 supports Step-by-step execution, just hit F8 or Ctrl just the way you would to start Windows in Safe mode, and then select Steb-by-step confirmation
