I have this 4 gb mp3 player, and my Aunt recently gave me a old computer from 2000. I reformatted it when I got it and installed XP but I would like to try out MS-DOS 6.22.

Would I be able to boot up with DOS 6.22 from my mp3 player while still having windows XP, or do I have to reformat again.

Also, what are these boot disks for DOS?
I don't understand what they are.

Is the MP3 Player recognised as a "Hard Drive" (Flash Drive/Thumb Drive) and does the BIOS support 'boot from usb' ?

Hi,

I never thought of booting from an .MP3
player with DOS on it but i suppose you
can try to transpose some of the topics
discussed here:

http://slax.hosting4p.com/forum/vie...

The site has been moved recently, please
take note that "www.slax.org" must now be
replaced by "slax.hosting4p.com"...

Sorry for having no better insight, i hope
it's going to suffice as a starter; the
point here is to mention what's involved
and the dangers you'll be facing.

FYI: MP3 Players are actually Flash Media, unfortunately many manufactuers code the Boot Sector so it can not be SYSed.

A) If one is fortunate to have a Motherboard BIOS with a Boot from USB Flash/Thumb/Hard Drive the drive should be listed in the BIOS boot sequence. If that is the case the drive can be formatted and MS-DOS6.22 installed, usually from floppy...

B) If the motherboard does not support USB Booting then a Boot Floppy or CD will need to be created and various USB MS-DOS6.22 Drivers tried unitl a stable access to the drive is achieved.

Therefore you would need to boot of the BootCD/Floppy, but the O/S itself can be installed on the USB Drive providing one modifies the CONFIG and AUTOEXEC to point to the Drive.

This works for Compact Flash Cards in an adaptor so as all these types of media adhere to the ATA66 Standard it should feasibly work!
