boot failure

hi I have a compaq desktop pc sr2002x that I use practically everyday. And one day it just didn't want to work. when I turn it on the screen goes black and it says "boot fail" and asks to insert system disk. The problem is I bought the computer second hand what do I do?

You will have to use a boot disk (MS-Dos or something like that) with an fdisk program, to check, whether the boot partition at the harddisk is still there and set to active.

I would toss it.

But before trying to boot in DOS try checking the BIOS to see if HD FDD CD are recognized.

i put the boot disk in and it says boot pass then stays on the black screen doing nothing

Did you get nothing on screen or is there a prompt?
Something like
A:>

If so, it's ok and you can normally use dos commands to check e.g. whether there are partitions on your harddisk and whether one ot the partitions is set to acttive so that it can be used to boot up your system.
The command to check for partitions is named FDISK.

no there isn't a A:> on the screen it talks about the copyrights of the cd rom of the boot disk I inserted.

i downloaded the cd rom boot image from active @ bootdisk and its actually a demo it came with a program to create the cd rom bootdisk. I created the dos edition.
