Backup large file to zip @ dos prompt

My gateway (w982d) crashed. I can get in at the dos level, but that's it. Does anyone know of any way I can backup a large file to a zip drive that I've got installed as a "guest"? (And then, of course, restore it to a functioning W98 computer.)

Zip drives are usually accessible in DOS as removable drives. How big of a file are you talking here anyway? You should just be able to use COPY in DOS. If it's too big, you might need to use PKZIP to compress it and span it over several disks.

Thanks for the answer, but it's 500mg (it's my outlook.pst file) so while I was able to use PKzip/copy on some other stuff, it won't take this one down far enough to fit on one 100mg Zip disk. It's the last please-don't-let-me-lose-this-one file on the system before I send the contents to Format Heaven. Surely somebody knows of a Dos utility/shareware that'll do this for me? I have one, but IT doesn't recognize the removable drive, wouldn't you know.....

You could CARVE the zip file into several smaller files. I never carved a compressed file, but it works on everything else. I have such a utility and I understand that ZIP software itself contains such a function. email me, fred6008@earthlink.net with an email address if you need a file carving utility.
