I read somewhere that you can direct your temp files to where ever you like, I looed at my autoexec file and seen the commands they were talking about were there, but I am kinda worried about just winging this, I already backed it up, and my question is:

If I want to default all cookies to my Recycle BIN instead of the Temporary Internet Files folder, what should I change the path to?

For instance and this is me guessing:

SET TEMP=C:\RECYCLE\
SET TMP=C:\RECYCLE\

is that right?

Thanks

All you are doing in Autoexec.Bat is setting the DOS environment. This will have no effect on Internet Explorer at all!

It would be great if it would!!

Well,
it's a good thing i didn't wing it huh, lol. You know what I got another Idea, but I am afraid this will taint the forum. But, you sound interested, so I'll tell you what Im thinking:

If we fire up the regedit and tweak the reg keys which direct the temp files to the temporary internet folder, which I know exists I seen it while searching the reg keys, we can place the directory to the recycle bin vs the temp folder.

The problem is this:

I have no idea what the location of the recycle bin is...lol And if you type something like:

C:\RECYCLE\

Windows makes a folder named RECYCLE and the files go there. I even searched for the class ID and placed it in there, nothing, I found the link to the shortcut I made placed that in there, and nothing, and even tried using its @C:\bla blah location and nothing. It just keeps making new folders.

Therfore unless someone comes along and tells us the exact address to the recycle bin, we are stumped....lol

till then

You are trying to play with two of the special folders and think that you have some control of them (like a typical DOS programmer). Not so. Both the RECYCLE folder and the Temporary Internet files folders are special folders created by Windows and you can't play with them from DOS without messing them up. They are Hidden and protected. Windows creates special INDEX.DAT files for them to keep track of things.

The logical thing to do is to look into DELINDEX.BAT file and set it up to delete all the cookies when you boot the system.

Hey,
thanks for the compliment, (dos programmer), makes me feel good :) though I assure you I am still have alot to learn. ;)

Anyway, I already did that with a reg hack, and hide my IE explorer, reg hack again, so that I wouldnt be tempted to use it. lol

I now use Mozilla Firebird, which is a great browser, by the way. PLus I havent found any evidence that it saves your files to hidden dir, so far so good I guess.

Yes, INDEX.DAT is bad! I know all about it, in fact I have written and published a tutorial on that subject already. I talk about how to delete the files, and how to view them and so on. Plus, I talk about the OutLook Express, .dbx files which also log your email activity, which you may of already knew. Now these files are not hidden, and can be deleted from windows, and basically thats what Im trying to delete. I know I said cookies but I didn't feel like going in dept on the subject of .dbx files, ;)

So yeah thats what Im really trying to accomplish with this, but it's looking grim. I would need to write a some sort of program to do this, and that to me is like re-inventing the wheel, I might as well just keep with adding the folder to my taskbar and manually deleting the files everytime I log out, of outlook. I guess that isnt to bad. ;)

But hey if anyone comes up with a great idea, please share!

regards, and thanks for the replys, much appreciated! ;)

I would not say its a hidden folder as such.

In Windows XP you can find it at:
(xxxxx = Your Folder Name)

C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxx\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Only they are not that temporary!

Its a little different in 9x versions.

You can get software programs that flush all your 'Temporary' files each time you exit windows - It all depends on what you have to hide?

Well, to add to that:

The Index.DAT files are hidden to an extent in ME atleast, I dont have much experience with 9x but I know of ways to view them in windows as well. PLus I should say before a blast comes my way, I intially did intend on using the info on the BAT file to flush out my cookies, but then tweaked my reg to do that on reboot so instantanioulsy my perspectives changed, so I directed my focus towards the dbx files, that being said.

If anyones interested the way to view the hidden contents of the CONTENT.IE5 folder is like so:

1. start
2. find
3. files or folders
4. in the "look in" text box of the "find files or folders program type: C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files
5. hit the "search" button

and presto the files magically appear in the right pane of the window.

cool right?

Why not just click on Tools the Internet Options Under General - Temporary Internet Files click on Settings then View Files You can then delete the ones you do not want.

Mick C,
That's because doing that would only show you the temporary files, not the slacker files, which is what I call them, I assure you if you try this experiment you will surely see what I am talking about.

First:
Go ahead and delete all your cookies from the Temporary Internet Files, Folder.

Ok, Now Second:
Follow these steps:
1. start
2. find
3. files or folders
4. in the "look in" text box of the "find files or folders program type: C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files
5. hit the "search" button

Now what do you see? I bet you will be surprised. May be not, but I guarentee you that you will find left over files that were not suppost to be left behind, but are, in order to track your movement, locally, perhaps Globally, and even email and internet wise. That's why it is imperative to use software to cover your tracks, especially if you tend to go places you don't want others to know about, for instance, wife, girl friend, parents, boss, etc... heck even the computer repair guy... go ahead try the experiment and see what you get, come back and post the results.

Thanks Mick

I will try that. However since I have nothing to hide it does not worry me that much anyway!
