I am trying to figure out why when initiating a NEC DVD-RW drive while booting from DOS it is slow. The drive does initiate eventually but takes about a minute to do it. I am using the basic Atapi.sys file that works on most cd/dvd drives. Anyone have any thoughts as to why it is slow.

Download eltorito.sys hardware independant cd/dvd driver. It is used where atapi.sys use is questionable. The above Bart's site is a must reference.Good luck.

I've always attributed the lag to the drive trying to decide exactly what kind of a disk it has in it and then accessing the data on it. They should have put RW boot CD at the top of the list instead of at the bottom?

Not only do I have to change Boot order in my BIOS to pull off a CD boot but I have to change the boot speed to slow or the CD will fail to boot.
