Comment:

I recently downloaded the Arachne web browser for DOS off some website to install on my old 486SX-25mhz 1mb RAM, Color Video Card, etc. Anyway, I installed and tried to run this program under DOS 5.0. I can't use my AOL account on it, so I am using another dialup connection which I sometimes use on my laptop (I am typing this on the laptop), but the problem is that I would connect to the internet and then I would see a dos screen telling me that I don't have enough "Conventional DOS Memory"? And I downloaded, installed, and ran this on my computer with 256mb ram, and still got the same problem! Will someone tell me what's wrong?

Conventional memory has NOTHING to do with how much RAM you have.Deffinition of conventional memory
How to get more of it for an application

P.S. AOL can't be used with Arachne. No big loss.

I got the same errors at first. I then ran MEMMAKER and was able to connect for the first time, however I don't think that DOS 5.0 has MEMMAKER.

Then I set up a RAMDRIVE (sometimes called RAMDISK, which got things running better, but not great)

You should really get your RAM updated to at least 8 Meg which should be pretty cheap, probably find 8 megs on ebay for under $10.

Then you should try creating a RAMDRIVE to run ARACHNE. I think that it is explained somewhere in the documentation. You might want to search the WEB for more information on setting up RAMDRIVES.

So far I haven't haven't been able to keep a reliable connection going with Arachne but I can at least connect and surf a bit.

You can also use miniterm, which comes with arachne to connect before starting the browser, allowing you to get by with a bit less conventional RAM.
My connection with Arachne is every bit as reliable as with Windows, but many sites load more slowly.

I am using text acces & I am am not shure
how my answer answer will print on this
group. I have 6 hrs/year graphic acess from
my provider and use Arachne for it. The new
version works fine. About 2 versions back it did not. The lines I can type on seems to have ran out will check back and try a to post a proper answer
