Comment: Hey I have tried formatting 1.44 MB floppy disks to 720KB, so i can create boot disks for my amstrad. I have covered up the second hole. I format it in MS DOS by typing: format a:/t:80/n:9. It then comes up with following error: Format can not run because process is in use by another vloume. to dismount this volume press Y! I press Y then it says cannot lock drive. The volume is still in use. Any help would be great

Reply: (edit)I presume you mean 3.5 inch disks? Do not cover up hole and just use the following: FORMAT A: /F:720 This will format to default track size etc

Reply: (edit)Actually, if you don't cover the 'other' hole you'll probably end up with a 'track 0 bad' error when you try to use the disk. However, you would not get the error posted - which sounds more like a Windows message. Can you use a 720K on an Amstrad? We have nothing against ideas. Reply: (edit)That's fine - I just thought they were fussier than that ; ) You might get that error message if you were trying to format your hard drive using Win2k/NT/XP - doesn't seem to be a (real) DOS message We have nothing against ideas. Reply: (edit)Yes - I realize that. While I am unfamiliar with the NT based OS's, I don't believe you can format floppies (FAT12) with the "MS-DOS" emulation. Like I mentioned, that error message is not associated with actual DOS. You indicate you have 98, which does have DOS - try that. We have nothing against ideas. Reply: (edit)Probably - it's DOS based as well, although M$ tried very hard to disguise that fact. We have nothing against ideas. We're against people spreading them. - General Augusto Pinochet of Chile
