Comment: I have a Aladdin DOS Game from vigin interactive software. I still encounter problem that I can not play aladdin game in pure MS DOS6.22 (I've uninstall all existing OS=XP and Win98). I do not know how to set it works eventhough want to play without sound. It comes out a message saying that "XMS allocation error" what shall i do to fix this problem. My computer is dell pentium 4 2.4gb and my ram is 512ddr ram. As i hear people say that alladin only can run under computer with ram less than 32mb. so what shall i resolve this problem in order to play my aladdin game. I am doing and try out many solution in a couple of weeks already, pls help me on this and thank u very much of your kindness

Reply: (edit)Some true dos games simply will not run when there is too much memory (just as some will not run in dos under windows). e.g. wolf. This can be true even when the pc is running in strict dos mode. The cause is that software is not always forward compatible (for o/s and/or h/w). The same can be said for o/s and h/w in that they are not always backward compatible. Good luck - keep us posted.

Reply: (edit)You have to enabel EMS in config.sys using emm386.exe. Here's an example of my config.sys file: [menu] menuitem=BASIC, No EMS, no CD-ROM. menuitem=NORMAL, No EMS, with CD-ROM. menuitem=EMS, EMS, no CD-ROM. menuitem=BOTH, EMS, with CD-ROM. menudefault=NORMAL,2 menucolor=7,0 [BASIC] DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=C:\WIN98\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WIN98\EMM386.EXE /NOEMS /NOVCPI [NORMAL] DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=C:\WIN98\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WIN98\EMM386.EXE /NOEMS /NOVCPI DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001 [EMS] DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=C:\WIN98\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WIN98\EMM386.EXE RAM [BOTH] DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=C:\WIN98\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WIN98\EMM386.EXE RAM DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001 [COMMON] DEVICEHIGH=C:\WIN98\COMMAND\ANSI.SYS

Reply: (edit)Spider - I am not sure EMM386 is the answer to the problem. Although if it works - great. The reason I say this, is that it was my understanding EMM386 provided support by emulation of EXPANDED memory for applications that required this type of memory. These would be few and far between now. Expanded memory is a very old type of memory found only on the earliest of pc's. For an explanation of such see message 11223 on the dos forum. Good luck - keep us posted.

Reply: (edit)Follow the SpiderMSN advice and put: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM in your CONFIG.SYS to enable emulation of expanded memory. EXPANDED MEMORY: This was a method to make available to DOS real mode programs up to 32MB of RAM (accesible throw 64KB pages, the page frame is in upper memory usually at E000), since you don't need to put the processor in protected mode it works with 8086/80286 and beyond processors. 286 processors can work in protected mode but they cannot return easily to real mode (BIOS and DOS only can work in real mode), so it was a good idea to use such card. Those expanded memory cards become rare with 386 processors and I never have seen a 486 with one, probably because 32 bit processors can emulate this type of memory so there isn't any reason to buy such card. If you want to run that game and still don't work try to buy a 486 processor, you can get one for almost nothing (or nothing) and it'll be very useful to run those old games.

Reply: (edit)It's my experience with Disney games like Aladdin and The Lion King that they require EMS. DEVICE=C:\...\EMM386.EXE /NOEMS /NOVCPI That line provides access to high memory but not EMS and: DEVICE=C:\...\EMM386.EXE RAM Provides access to EMS as well as high memory.

Reply: (edit)There's a program called SetBlaster (SETBLAST.EXE) that you might want to download from somewhere (do a search on your favourae search engine). The program will help you find the correct Card Address DMA and Interupt.
