Comment: I'm using DOS on Windows NT. I want to use a DOS program to add a datestamp to the name of a file (i.e. myfile.txt becomes myfile20020110.txt). I saw one help note on a webpage telling me to use a freeware that gives me a command 'date_var' to capture datetime into into variables, but can't find the freeware, nor can I find another way to do this. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Reply: (edit)The old Dos version of Norton Utilities had a program called FD.EXE which could do exactly what you want. I don't think it's shipped with the latest versions of Norton though, as they now seem to cater for Windows stuff only. FD.EXE may be downloadable from somewhere.....

Reply: (edit)Doesn't DOS only allow 8 characters for a filename? a file named 123456789.txt is listed in DOS as 123456~1.txt But a program doing what you want would be easy to write for Windows - is there some reason it has to be done in DOS?
