access share without DNS

i try to access a win2k share from pc dos but it only works if i specify a dns server
why can't i access the share over the ip? (like this: \\x.x.x.x\share)

Are you sure you are running your DOS Client with TCP/IP and not NetBui/Netbios? That's the only reason I could think why that wouldn't work. Also, is the machine your trying to access on the same network segment? Perhaps you don't have your gateway configured correctly.
